Behind the Scenes

August 21st, 2010 by Simeon

This time of year is usually pretty quiet for us all in MaSamba – with the majority of Summer festivals over, many of the youth services on holidays and a couple of weeks to go before the schools return, a strange calm descends on our office.

However, this is really just a chance to re-group and plan for the remainder of the year, and simply to tidy up a busy rehearsal room.

There are a few interesting projects in the offing, including a showcase performance of our new show ‘Bloco Afro Brasil’ as part of Culture Night in Temple Bar, a major youth drumming project in Clondalkin, funded by the local Drugs Task Force, and our own Samba Night Course, which kicks off on September 14th.

We are also in discussions with our partners on the Community Services Programme about being an active part of a campaigning day to promote the great work which is carried out by the Programme with the help of government funding, on September 10th, and also on the Day of Action for the Arts on September 17th.

We have also bee talking to some of the band leaders from around the country to see if there are any projects we could collaborate on for the coming year, and there has been a few very useful suggestions – next task will be finding some money to make them a reality.

Finally, Simeon is travelling to Nottingham in September to co-facilitate the ‘FutureRoots‘ samba weekend, with his friend and mentor Dudu Tucci – this promises to be an amazing weekend of workshops, and Simeon reckons he will learn as much as he teaches!

A Day of Weather, and Good News!

June 17th, 2010 by Simeon

The weather here in Dublin has been great over the last couple of days, which makes everything better, even though it probably contributed to a relatively low turn out at rehearsals last night!

It’s easy to feel more positive when the weather is good, but we have other reasons too. This morning, we opened the post to find a letter from City of Dublin Youth Service, informing us that we have been approved for a grant of €400 towards our Summer Project with young people. It’s not as much as we would have liked, but in these though times, it all helps.

Later in the day, our friends in The Irish Music Rights Organisation contacted us to tell us that their Board of Directors have approved a special grant of €1300 for our many music education programmes.

Finally, earlier in the week, we had some news from our friends in Contemporanea, in that they will sponsor some of the instruments needed for our upcoming Bloco Afro Brasil project, whereby we will represent the great music and dance tradition of Bahia.

All in all, a good week all round! AND a team in green and white just thrashed France in the world cup!

This Summer will be Sensational!

After a really successful workshop with Mario Pam of Ile Aiye on Wednesday, the band is full of energy for the Summer season ahead!

Mario put us through our paces with some old-school Ile Aiye rhythms, exactly as they are played on the CDs, which will fit nicely into our Bloco Afro Brasil project.

We also learned yesterday that our new costumes may be ready by the end of this month, which is much quicker than anticipated. Then, all we will need is a suitable event to debut the show at.

Tonight, we are making the trip to Carrickmacross to play a festival there, and from now on, the season starts to pick up with confirmed gigs in Cavan, Drogheda, Belfast, as well as a few possible events closer to home – let’s hope the weather remains as good as it is now!
